iBright (a tentative, working title because sometimes naming something is the hardest part)

To start with the backstory of how this piece came to light, it must be known that last year I made quite a few lamp purchases for the house. It was almost as if I could not get enough light in the evening that wasn't from overhead and had a need for the rooms to glow warmly. I suppose if you buy enough of one thing, creativity will save you from the monotony- or at least hopefully it will at some point. This floor lamp came to me while working many months in plaster for the historic Bank building and while my hands had to stay busy doing that, my mind was able to visualize the details before I was able to actualize them.

As the world slipped into the darkness of winter and political forces at play, I began to really think on what it means to be a light in the world. How can we recognize the other lights out there and how can we hold onto to the glimmers being reflected back to us? This was many moments of deep contemplation that turned into something to meditate on while in the act of making the lamp. I feel this is why it started to take an 'eye-like' shape instead of my original thought of an egg-shape to represent a genesis (that thought will be saved for a later piece, however)

For me, there is a dual representation happening. Not only our minds' eye seeing the light reflecting in others but the all seeing eye that sees when there is no one else watching.

I love the way the light is very directional when it is on- it pairs well with this ode to Rothko painting and portrait so very well for that reason. (definitely will need to write my musing for that painting soon!)
